Penny has over 25 years’ experience in meteorological and climate research, with expertise in model and observations data processing, analysis and visualisation. She worked on including new observation types in numerical weather prediction at the UK Met Office, before joining the Met Office Hadley Centre where she specialised in producing new diagnostics and indicators for climate prediction/ impacts studies, and developing climate services.
Penny has an MSc in Meteorology from Reading University, and with an interest in interdisciplinary links between the natural and social sciences, has subsequently gained a BA in International Studies. She is a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society and has participated in many international projects including recent contributions to Future Climate for Africa HyCRISTAL, EU H2020 SECLI-FIRM and Focus Africa. Penny joined WEMC in May 2021, and from November 2021 has been the science and technical team lead.
