PRESS RELEASE: Climate and Energy experts launch Teal: a free, easy-to-use global climate data tool
PRESS RELEASE
19 November 2020
Teal is a new free climate data tool, released by the World Energy & Meteorology Council (WEMC) and designed to raise awareness about our changing climate. It ensures global historical climate and carbon emissions data is accessible, easily visualised and understood. The design is distinctive and modern incorporating the teal colour that gives the tool its name and the Teal user journey is simple.
Based on previous EU Copernicus Climate Change Services (C3S) projects and demonstration tools, as well as current EU H2020 SECLI-FIRM project developments, Teal enables a wider audience, from energy producers to environmental reporters, undergraduates to educators as well as meteorologists to explore historical worldwide climate change for free.
The WEMC development team, composed of scientists, designers, data engineers and software developers, worked with Nth Ltd. on the software infrastructure and removed common barriers when designing Teal such as overly technical data selection panels, the need to handle complex climate data streams and navigate through several layers of unfamiliar information. In brief, through four simple steps Teal shows you climate change data on a visualisation of the globe and graphs. And the exciting part is that Teal is easy to use, free and no sign-up is required.
The global climate and carbon emission data Teal uses come from reliable sources and tracks the past several decades, from around 1980 to near real time. A global map shows climate data by country and sub-country. These show as temporal time steps, through years, seasons, months and days. Teal datasets use historical reanalysis data (ERA5) from the EU Copernicus Climate Data Store as it is quality-assured, updated in close to real-time and at high resolution. The carbon emission data comes from the internationally reputable Global Carbon Project.
With its unwavering and resolute support for a sustainable energy transition on the basis of strong scientific credibility, WEMC is launching Teal at the time of the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement and amid the European Green Deal. The accessibility of climate data using the Teal tool supports the key message that ‘no-one is left behind’ in the race to achieve a climate neutral economy by 2050.
Teal is built on previous C3S demo tools: the European Climatic Energy Mixes (ECEM, 2015-2018) demo and the C3S Climate & Energy Educational Demo (2019-2020) and its development achieves a long-term vision for WEMC Founder and Managing Director, Professor Alberto Troccoli:
“I’m so appreciative of our team of WEMC collaborators for developing such an informative tool and I’m therefore very excited for us to unveil Teal. Whether you are an energy producer, student or you are concerned about the climate in which you live you deserve easy access to accurate information to inform your decisions and discussions. As experts in this field WEMC has successfully removed the barriers to access of scientific data with the launch of Teal.”
