Summary of the role
The Deputy Director of Climate Change Service (C3S) will support the Director in managing the delivery of ECMWF’s C3S services in accordance with the EC/ECMWF delegation agreement and strategy that has been agreed with the European Commission until 2021. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the plans for the evolution of C3S, including concepts for new service elements such as the anthropogenic CO2 emissions monitoring activities. They will also take an active role in supporting the negotiations with the EC of the next delegation agreement under the EC 2021-2027 Multiyear Financial Framework. The Deputy Director will have line-management responsibility for a number of senior scientists and their teams.
The Deputy Director of C3S is expected to support the Director of C3S and the Director of Copernicus Services in representing ECMWF at the European Commission for Copernicus Climate Change related purposes and will maintain excellent stakeholder relationships with the Council Members of the ECMWF Member and Co-operating States, national governmental agencies and other stakeholders, with an interest in the work of C3S.

Main duties and key responsibilities
• Supporting the Director of C3S in developing and implementing C3S plans, and providing leadership, direction and guidance to the scientific and technical staff in the Service.
• Line management of some team leaders
• Providing scientific and technical leadership to the team to achieve continual improvements in C3S product delivery
• Coordinating the interfaces with other Departments at ECMWF to ensure common understanding of the ECMWF deliverables to C3S  and efficient delivery of the outputs
• Coordinating with underpinning research activities at ECMWF to ensure highest quality scientific inputs to C3S production
• Supporting the C3S Director in liaising with external stakeholders (users and providers) and promoting C3S activities in various fora
• Contributing to planning and reporting for the Copernicus Services Department
• Supporting the Copernicus Contract management team on technical and scientific aspects of +external contracts related to C3S.
